The Optimist Mast Safety Clamp is designed to hold your mast tight in the boat during a capsize. Simply clamp this around the mast and snug it up the bottom side of the forward thwart. Once in position, you should be able to lift up the bow of the Optimist by pulling up on the mast. The included tether allows you to tie the clamp to the mast step so it doesn't fall out or get lost wile not in use.

We highly recommend that every Optimist, regardless of sailor skill level, has one of these. If the mast tie in line comes loose or is improperly tied, the mast can slip out of the mast step cup and cause major damage to the forward thwart and mast collar.
