Get your junior sailor ready for the water with our Junior Sailing Checklist covering all essential and optional gear young (or just starting out) sailors need. Perfect for sailing camp, lessons, and junior programs to ensure kids are safe, comfortable, and prepared.
Essentials:
- Life Jacket (PFD) - Properly fitting and USCG - approved for your child's weight and size.
- Whistle - Attached to the life jacket for emergency signaling (not for use in the car on the way to sailing or at home).
- Sunglasses - With UV protection and a strap to prevent loss overboard.
- Sunscreen - Water - resistant broad spectrum SPF 30+ (Don't forget to reapply!).
- Footwear - Closed-toe water shoes or neoprene sailing boots for protection and added grip.
- Hat - Wide-brimmed or baseball style are preferred to block the sun and keep your sailor cooler. We recommend getting a hat clip if your hat doesn't have one built in.
Optional (but recommended):
- UV Shirt or Rash Guard - UV protective clothing adds another layer to sun protection. Ideally this layer is also wicking and quick dry for maximum comfort on the water.
- Spray Top - A waterproof and wind proof top is invaluable when the clouds come in, temperatures drop, and the wind picks up.
- Sailing Gloves - Protect your sailor's hands form rope burns and blisters as they "learn the ropes" of sailing.
- Reusable Water Bottle - Hydration is very important on the water.
- Dry Bag - Keep personal items and gear safe and dry while sailing or on the coach boat.
