The new Harken ILCA / Laser MK2 Vang Lower Unit is a unique design that builds on the classic Harken vang. Every sheave has a larger diameter for more power and are wider to decrease friction, perfect for working with the increased load on modern vang systems. In addition to being smoother running and easier to adjust, Harken's proven Carbo nylon-reinforced composite material also leads to a 21% weight sacings over the classic stainless steel version. A few tweaks to the design make the unit a but more aero friendly and prevents fouling the cunningham or outhaul controls. This vang base features all Harken Fly sheaves with stainless bearings running in stainless races. The last turn before the mico Cammatic is a lightweight stainless ferrule which replaces the fairlead in earlier designs. The cleating angle has been made to match the existing standard but there's a wedge in there for those who would like to experiment.

The system's design anticipates that sailors may want to remove some system purchase to reduce the amount of line in the cockpit - it easily converts from 15:1 to 12:1 and back again.
