Laser / ILCA FAQ's

What's the difference between an ILCA and Laser?
  • Long story short: The Laser and ILCA are the same boat and parts are physically interchangeable - BUT - only new ILCA parts or older parts with Laser class approved stickers are class legal for racing.
The Laser / ILCA has multiple rig sizes, which do I need?

Here's a rough guide to selecting the proper Laser / ILCA rig.

  • Laser 4.7 / ILCA 4 = 100 - 140lbs Sailor Weight
  • Laser Radial / ILCA 6 = 140 - 165lbs Sailor Weight
  • Laser Standard / ILCA 7 = 165lbs + Sailor Weight

If you sail in an area with high winds, you may want to consider a rig one step smaller than the chart above shows. By going with a smaller rig you will have an easier time keeping the boat flat. If you sail in an area with lighter winds, you may want to choose a larger rig for the extra power.
