We're here to help you choose the right boat for your needs, so let's make sure you understand the difference between the classic Sunfish and the new ISCA.
We all know the Sunfish, but what's an ISCA?
The simple answer: they are the same boat, but new ISCA's are legal for racing and new Sunfish are not. Confusing? Yes, let's continue. Sunfish and ISCA's look identical, parts are interchangeable, and both will be built going forwards. But, only the ISCA is approved for International Sunfish Class Association (ISCA) racing and will come with a World Sailing sticker. Newly built (2025+) Sunfish will not have World Sailing stickers and therefore will not be legal to race in ISCA events.
Key Takeaway: If you're buying a new Sunfish / ISCA and you want to race, you'll need an ISCA.
Can I still race my older Sunfish in ISCA events?
Yes. Older Sunfish built prior to 1990 or newer boats with World Sailing / ISAF stickers in the cockpit are considered legal for all levels of ISCA racing. Typically these stickers are found on the front wall of the cockpit.
Which one do I need, Sunfish or ISCA?
If racing is the plan then choose the ISCA which is class legal for racing at any level. For recreational sailing, either the Sunfish or ISCA will bring you the same enjoyment on the water. Again, both boats are identical and share the classic Sunfish traits of being simple to rig and easy to sail for sailors of all skill levels.
